Oxygen Art Center is launching 10 new courses for 2021 with a wealth of experiences waiting for you! Immerse yourself in poetry, delve into painting, cut and paste (old style) with collages, let yourself be consumed by color theory, channel your inner fashion designer or discover the variety of sound-based research.

“Oxygen is incredibly fortunate to have such a skilled and creative faculty,” says Education Coordinator Natasha Smith. “Our instructors have again proposed a rich, unique collection of courses for 2021. They teach what they love and draw on their unique experience and research. I think that is what makes oxygen courses so special.”

In February, discover painting in a series of four sessions in Beginners Brush 1, and develop an eye for the sometimes subtle and always dynamic nature of color in an Introduction to Color Theory, both taught by the talented Deborah Thompson, before going headed to Alert Bay, BC, for artist residency in March.

Smith is offering online collage and painting courses in 2021, including “Mapping Memory: Collaging a Personal History,” where students can cut, paste, and map personal memories and visually share personal experiences, stories, and stories, and “Abstract Collage Painting “which explains how this works. Use physical textures and create complex, intricate abstract designs on wooden panels.

From the end of February you will learn the elements of fashion design and wearable art with the designer, curator and entrepreneur Seathra Bell in design for fashion and wearable art in three online courses. In Sonic Imaginaries 2: Interdisciplinary Artist for Voice, Performance and Creative Composition, prOphecy sun will uncover the multiple possibilities of how sound is implemented as a creative expression in contemporary art practices, installations, sound walks, public art, theater, live performance and music production.

April is poetry month and oxygen is celebrating! Instructor Rayya Liebich will help demystify the reading and writing of poetry.

“Enjoy the language game, have fun creating poems together and above all you will discover that poetry is a gift for everyone,” says Liebich, who offers three different writing courses online, including: Be Not Afeard: A poetry workshop for beginners; Open up the poetic unconscious; and April Poetry Challenge: 30 days, 30 poems!

In addition to Leibich’s lessons, Rilke’s reading and writing with Susan Andrews Grace will use a careful reading of Rainer Marie Rilke’s poems as the basis for the participants’ own composition. The exploration of sound, rhythm, image and mystery / soul in Rilke takes place in four online courses.

During these troubled times of COVID-19, we all lack the ability to spend time with our friends and family. So take part in an online course together! Oxygen is now offering a 10 percent discount when you bring a friend to one of our art classes. If you want, you can also give a gift of creativity with the new Oxygen Education Gift Certificates available online.
